Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. In most people with the disease — those with the late-onset type symptoms first appear in their mid-60s. Early-onset Alzheimer’s occurs between a person’s 30s and mid-60s and is very rare. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia among older adults.

Symptoms
  • Difficulty - Confusion with everyday tasks
  • Repetition of questions just answered
  • Communication problems
  • Getting lost
  • Personality changes
  • Confusion about time and place
  • Misplacing things
  • Troubling behavior
  • Loss of interest, or apathy
  • Forgetting old and new memories

Root Causes

The causes of Alzheimer’s disease are not yet fully understood. However, scientists believe that the causes probably include a combination of age-related changes in the brain, along with genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. In people with early-onset Alzheimer’s, a genetic mutation may be the cause. Late-onset Alzheimer’s arises from a complex series of brain changes that may occur over decades.

Therapeutic Strategies

Nutritional Support Items

ESSENTIAL:

  • Acetylcholine ( EQ Neurotransmitter Pro): Deficiency has been implicated as possibly causing dementia. Take 500 mg 3 times daily, on an empty stomach.
  • Acetyl-L-carnitine (EQ L Carnitine) : May enhance brain metabolism. Slows down deterioration of memory and reduces the production of free radicals. Take 500 mg twice daily.
  • Boron: Improves brain and memory function. Take 3 mg daily. Do not exceed this amount.
  • Detox Support NS Aquamax 2-8 ozs daily, BL HM Detox: Supports the immune system’s detoxification of many toxic substances. Take as directed on label.
  • Coenzyme Q10 (EQ CoQ10, FGF CoMega): Increases oxygenation of cells and is involved in the generation of cellular energy. Take 100-200 mg daily.
  • Folic acid (AI B12Folate): To aid in controlling homocysteine levels. Studies have shown high levels of homocysteine in this disorder. Take as directed on label. Do not exceed 1,000 mcg daily.
  • Iron (AI Iron): A deficiency may be present. Caution: Do not take iron unless prescribed by your physician. Take as directed by physician.
  • DMAE (NS Memory 2 capsules 2 -3 times daily): Needed for improved memory. Contains choline.  For capsules, take 1,200 mg 3 times daily, before meals.
  • Multivitamin and mineral complex with potassium NS Liquid Life, NS Colloidal Minerals Plus, BL Total Nutrition Plus): All nutrients are necessary in balance. Needed for proper electrolyte balance.. Take 99 mg daily. .
  • Pycnogenol or grape seed extract (NS Grape Seed Extract 2 caps 2-3 times daily): Potent antioxidants that readily pass the blood-brain barrier to protect brain cells from free radical damage. For pycnogenol, take 60 mg 3 times daily. For grape seed extract, take as directed on label.
  • S-adenosyl-methionine (SAMe): Lowers homocysteine levels. Caution: Do not use if you have bipolar mood disorder or take prescription antidepressants. Take 400 mg twice daily.
  • Selenium (AI Selenium): Powerful antioxidant for brain cell protection. Take 200 mcg daily.
  • Trimethylglycine (TMG): Assists the body in utilizing vitamin B12, folic acid, and vitamin B6. It also helps to rid the body of toxic elements (such as homocysteine) and increases levels of the natural mood elevator S-adenosylmethionine. Take 500–1,000 mg daily, in the morning.
  • Vitamin A, plus carotenoids (including beta-carotene) (BL Total Nutrition Plus), and vitamin E (EQ Initial E): Deficiencies of antioxidants expose the brain to oxidative damage. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps in the transport of oxygen to the brain cells and protects them from free radical damage. Caution: If you are taking blood-thinning medication, consult your physician before taking vitamin E. For vitamin A, take 3,000 mcg (10,000 IU) daily. Do not exceed this amount from all sources. For carotenoids (including beta-carotene), take 25,000 IU daily. For vitamin E, take 90 mg (200 IU) daily. Use d-alpha-tocopherol form.
  • Vitamin B complex , plus extra vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and vitamin B12, or vitamin B complex, plus extra pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) (AI B Complex, EQ B Complex): Vitamin B complex is needed for brain function and aids in the digestion of food. Vitamin B6 deficiency can cause depression and mental difficulties. Vitamin B12 is important for brain function and deficient in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Extra pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) plays a role in converting choline into acetylcholine, needed for memory.  For Vitamin B complex injections, take 2 cc 3 times weekly or as prescribed by physician. For extra vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) injections, take ½ cc once weekly or as prescribed by physician. For vitamin B12, injections (under a doctor’s supervision) are fast and produce good results. If injections are not available, use a sublingual form. Take 1 cc 3 times weekly or as prescribed by physician. For vitamin B complex, if injections are not available, use a sublingual form. Take 100 mg of each major B vitamin (thiamine and riboflavin) 3 times daily. Amounts of individual vitamins in a complex will vary. Do not exceed 35 mg niacin, 100 mg vitamin B6 , and 1,000 mcg folate daily. For extra pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), take 100 mg 3 times daily.
  • Zinc (EQ Zinc): Powerful immune system stimulant. Necessary for T lymphocyte function, which is needed to fight infection. Take up to 40 mg daily, in divided doses, from all supplements.

IMPORTANT:

  • Apple pectin OR BL HM Detox: Aids in removing toxic metals such as mercury, which can contribute to dementia. Take as directed on label.
  • Calcium (NS Coral Calcium) and magnesium NS Magnesium Complex: Calcium has a calming effect and works with magnesium. Magnesium acts as a natural calcium channel blocker. For calcium, take 1,600 mg daily, at bedtime. For magnesium, take 350 mg daily. Do not exceed this amount from all sources.
  • Amino acids (NS Amino Complex 4 capsules daily): Needed for improved brain function and tissue repair.  Take 1,000–2,500 mg daily, 1 hour before meals. Take with 8 oz of fluid and a small amount of vitamins B6 and C for better assimilation.
  • Kelp (EQ Kelpcom 35 to 50 drops 2-3 times daily): Supplies needed minerals and aids in thyroid function. Take 1,000–1,500 mg daily.
  • Melatonin (NS Sleep Formula 3-4 caps 1 hour before bed): Improves brain function and aids sleep. Reduces cell destruction in the brain and has antioxidant properties. Take 2–3 mg daily, taken 2 hours or less before bedtime.
  • RNA and DNA: These are the brain’s cellular building blocks. Use a formula containing 200 mg RNA and 100 mg DNA per tablet. Caution: Do not take this supplement if you have gout. Take as directed on label.
  • Superoxide dismutase (SOD) (NS Superoxide Dismutase): A potent antioxidant that improves utilization of oxygen. For Superoxide dismutase (SOD), take as directed on label. .
  • Vitamin C (NS Liposomal Vitamin C): Enhances immune function and increases energy level; a powerful antioxidant. Use a buffered form. Take up to 2,000 mg daily, in divided doses.

 Reflexology
  1. Working the fingers to stimulate head/brain;
  2. Working the digestive system;
  3. Working the respiratory system;
  4. Techniques and reflex points to reduce anxiety.

 On this particular day Miss Y was not particularly communicative but I worked gently on reflex points to help support her digestive system and to relax and calm her generally. At one point she had been staring into space then she suddenly, but gently, took my hand, palm down, in her two hands and stroked and squeezed it. She gave a little smile, then held my hand in hers while she precisely pinched and worked each of my fingers individually. She took my thumb and tapped on the nails, and then turned my hand while she worked up and the down the palm which is part of a relaxation treatment for the organs and trunk. She was in deep concentration but a couple of times looked up at me and I thanked her for giving me such a lovely session. To finish she stroked up and down and then pressed the reflex points on the medial side of my thumb down to the wrist which refer to the spinal reflexes.. She followed that by gently brushing her fingers down my hands. This experience took about 10 minutes and only ended when I told I better start working her hands again so she got some benefit too!
