Anemia is a condition in which the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells and hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein that transports oxygen throughout the body and it is the structural part of red blood cells.

 

There are different types of Anemia which are listed below:

 

Vitamin Deficiency Anemia

Vitamin deficiency anemia is a lack of healthy red blood cells caused by lower than usual amounts of vitamin B-12 and folate.


This can happen if you don't eat enough foods containing vitamin B-12 and folate, or if your body has trouble absorbing or processing these vitamins. Without these nutrients, the body produces red blood cells that are too large and don't work properly. This reduces their ability to carry oxygen.

 

Symptoms
Vitamin deficiency anemia usually develops slowly over several months to years. Signs and symptoms may be subtle at first but usually increase as the deficiency worsens. These may include:
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Pale or yellowish skin
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Weight loss
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet
  • Muscle weakness
  • Personality changes
  • Unsteady movements
  • Mental confusion or forgetfulness
 Causes

Vitamin deficiency anemia can occur if you don't eat enough foods containing vitamin B-12 and folate, or if your body has trouble absorbing or processing these vitamins. Certain medications (acid blockers) can block the absorption of B12 and cause Vitamin B-12 deficiencies which in turn causes anemia.

 

Low levels of vitamin B-12 can be caused by:

Diet - Vitamin B-12 is mainly found in meat, eggs and milk, so people who don't eat these types of foods may need to take B-12 supplements. Some foods have been fortified with B-12, including some breakfast cereals and some nutritional yeast products.

 

Pernicious anemia - This condition occurs when the body's immune system attacks cells in the stomach that produce a substance called intrinsic factor. Without this substance, B-12 can't be absorbed in the intestines.

 

Gastric surgeries - If portions of your stomach or intestines have been surgically removed, that can reduce the amount of intrinsic factor produced and the amount of space available for vitamin B-12 to be absorbed.

 

Intestinal problems - Crohn's disease and celiac disease can interfere with absorption of vitamin B-12, as can tapeworms that may be ingested from eating contaminated fish.


Folate deficiencies

Also known as vitamin B-9, folate is a nutrient found mainly in dark green leafy vegetables and liver. A folate deficiency can occur when people don't eat foods containing folate or their bodies are unable to absorb folate from food.

 

Absorption problems may be caused by:

  • Intestinal diseases such as celiac disease
  • Surgical removal or bypass of a large part of the intestines
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Prescription drugs, such as some anti-seizure medications

 

Pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding have an increased demand for folate, as do people undergoing dialysis for kidney disease.

 

A lack of folate can cause birth defects during pregnancy. However, folate deficiency is less common now in countries that routinely add folate to food products such as breads, cereals and pasta.

 Complications

Being deficient in vitamin B-12 or folate increases your risk of many health problems, including:

  • Pregnancy complications - A developing fetus that doesn't get enough folate from its mother can develop birth defects of the brain and spinal cord.
  • Nervous system disorders - Untreated, vitamin B-12 deficiency can lead to neurological problems, such as persistent tingling in the hands and feet or problems with balance. It can lead to mental confusion and forgetfulness because vitamin B-12 is necessary for healthy brain function.
  • Gastric cancer - Pernicious anemia increases the risk of stomach or intestinal cancers.

 

Anemia Due to Iron Deficiency

Iron deficiency anemia is a common type of anemia — a condition in which blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body's tissues.

 

As the name implies, iron deficiency anemia is due to insufficient iron. Without enough iron, your body can't produce enough of a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen (hemoglobin). As a result, iron deficiency anemia may leave you tired and short of breath.

 

You can usually correct iron deficiency anemia with iron supplementation. There is a chance you could be bleeding internally (ulcerative conditions), excessive bleeding with cycles etc. These conditions would need to be remedied if they are a factor.

 Symptoms
Initially, iron deficiency anemia can be so mild that it goes unnoticed. But as the body becomes more deficient in iron and anemia worsens, the signs and symptoms intensify.

Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle cell anemia is one of a group of inherited disorders known as sickle cell disease. It affects the shape of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to all parts of the body.

 

Red blood cells are usually round and flexible, so they move easily through blood vessels. In sickle cell anemia, some red blood cells are shaped like sickles or crescent moons. These sickle cells also become rigid and sticky, which can slow or block blood flow.

 

There's no cure for most people with sickle cell anemia. Treatments can relieve pain and help prevent complications associated with the disease.

 

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of sickle cell anemia usually appear around 6 months of age. They vary from person to person and may change over time. Signs and symptoms can include:

  • Anemia - Sickle cells break apart easily and die. Red blood cells usually live for about 120 days before they need to be replaced. But sickle cells typically die in 10 to 20 days, leaving a shortage of red blood cells (anemia). Without enough red blood cells, the body can't get enough oxygen and this causes fatigue.
  • Episodes of pain - Periodic episodes of extreme pain, called pain crises, are a major symptom of sickle cell anemia. Pain develops when sickle-shaped red blood cells block blood flow through tiny blood vessels to your chest, abdomen and joints.
  • The pain varies in intensity and can last for a few hours to a few days. Some people have only a few pain crises a year. Others have a dozen or more a year. A severe pain crisis requires a hospital stay.
  • Some adolescents and adults with sickle cell anemia also have chronic pain, which can result from bone and joint damage, ulcers, and other causes.
  • Swelling of hands and feet - The swelling is caused by sickle-shaped red blood cells blocking blood circulation in the hands and feet.
  • Frequent infections - Sickle cells can damage the spleen, increasing vulnerability to infections. Infants and children with sickle cell anemia commonly receive vaccinations and antibiotics to prevent potentially life-threatening infections, such as pneumonia.
  • Delayed growth or puberty - Red blood cells provide the body with the oxygen and nutrients needed for growth. A shortage of healthy red blood cells can slow growth in infants and children and delay puberty in teenagers.
  • Vision problems - Tiny blood vessels that supply the eyes can become plugged with sickle cells. This can damage the retina — the portion of the eye that processes visual images — and lead to vision problems.

Idiopathic Aplastic Anemia

Aplastic Anemia is a condition that occurs when your body stops producing enough new blood cells. The condition leaves you fatigued and more prone to infections and uncontrolled bleeding.

 

A rare and serious condition, aplastic anemia can develop at any age. It can occur suddenly, or it can come on slowly and worsen over time. It can be mild or severe.

 

Treatment for aplastic anemia might include medications, blood transfusions or a stem cell transplant, also known as a bone marrow transplant.

 

 Symptoms

Aplastic anemia can have no symptoms. When present, signs and symptoms can include:

    This group of anemias is from red blood cells being destroyed faster than bone marrow can replace them. Certain blood diseases increase how fast red blood cells are destroyed. Some types of hemolytic anemia can be passed through families and are considered genetic.

     

    Thalassemia

    Thalassemia (thal-uh-SEE-me-uh) is an inherited blood disorder that causes your body to have less hemoglobin than normal. Hemoglobin enables red blood cells to carry oxygen. Thalassemia can cause anemia, leaving you fatigued.

     

    If you have mild thalassemia, you might not need treatment. But more severe forms might require regular blood transfusions. You can take steps to cope with fatigue, such as choosing a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

     Symptoms

    There are several types of thalassemia. The signs and symptoms you have depend on the type and severity of your condition.

    Thalassemia signs and symptoms can include:

    • Fatigue
    • Weakness
    • Pale or yellowish skin
    • Facial bone deformities
    • Slow growth
    • Abdominal swelling
    • Dark urine

    Some babies show signs and symptoms of thalassemia at birth; others develop them during the first two years of life. Some people who have only one affected hemoglobin gene don't have thalassemia symptoms.

     Causes

    Thalassemia is caused by mutations in the DNA of cells that make hemoglobin — the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body. The mutations associated with thalassemia are passed from parents to children.

     

    Hemoglobin molecules are made of chains called alpha and beta chains that can be affected by mutations. In thalassemia, the production of either the alpha or beta chains are reduced, resulting in either alpha-thalassemia or beta-thalassemia.

     

    In alpha-thalassemia, the severity of thalassemia you have depends on the number of gene mutations you inherit from your parents. The more mutated genes, the more severe your thalassemia.

     

    In beta-thalassemia, the severity of thalassemia you have depends on which part of the hemoglobin molecule is affected.

     

     Alpha-Thalassemia

    Four genes are involved in making the alpha hemoglobin chain. You get two from each of your parents. If you inherit:

    • One mutated gene, you'll have no signs or symptoms of thalassemia. But you are a carrier of the disease and can pass it on to your children.
    • Two mutated genes, your thalassemia signs and symptoms will be mild. This condition might be called alpha-thalassemia trait.
    • Three mutated genes, your signs and symptoms will be moderate to severe.
    • Inheriting four mutated genes is rare and usually results in stillbirth.

    Babies born with this condition often die shortly after birth or require lifelong transfusion therapy. In rare cases, a child born with this condition can be treated with transfusions and a stem cell transplant.

     

     Beta-Thalassemia

    Two genes are involved in making the beta hemoglobin chain. You get one from each of your parents. If you inherit:

    • One mutated gene, you'll have mild signs and symptoms. This condition is called thalassemia minor or beta-thalassemia.
    • Two mutated genes, your signs and symptoms will be moderate to severe. This condition is called thalassemia major, or Cooley anemia.

    Babies born with two defective beta hemoglobin genes usually are healthy at birth but develop signs and symptoms within the first two years of life. A milder form, called thalassemia intermedia, also can result from two mutated genes.

For vitamin B complex, take 50 mg of each major B vitamin (thiamine and riboflavin) 3 times daily. Amounts of individual vitamins in a complex will vary. Do not exceed 35 mg niacin, 100 mg vitamin B6 , and 1,000 mcg folate daily. For extra pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), take 50 mg 3 times daily. For vitamin B6, take up to 100 mg daily.
    • Vitamin C (NS Liposomal Vitamin C): Important in iron absorption. Take up to 2,000 mg daily.

    HELPFUL:

    • Copper and zinc (EQ Zinc plus Copper): Needed in red blood cell production. For copper, take 2 mg daily. For zinc, take 40 mg daily. Do not exceed this amount from all supplements. Note: If more zinc is used, increase copper proportionately. Needed to balance with copper.
    • S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) OR St Johns Wort (NS St Johns Wort 2 caps 2-3 times daily): Helps reduce stress and depression. Caution: Do not use if you have bipolar mood disorder or take prescription antidepressants. Do not give to a child under twelve. Take as directed on label.
