Bursitis

Bursitis (bur-SY-tis) is a painful condition that affects the small, fluid-filled sacs — called bursae (bur-SEE).

That cushion the bones, tendons and muscles near your joints. Bursitis occurs when bursae become inflamed.

The most common locations for bursitis are in the shoulder, elbow and hip. But you can also have bursitis by your knee, heel and the base of your big toe. Bursitis often occurs near joints that perform frequent repetitive motion.

 Symptoms
If you have bursitis, the affected joint might:
  • Feel achy or stiff
  • Hurt more when you move it or press on it
  • Look swollen and red

Root Causes

The most common causes of bursitis are repetitive motions or positions that put pressure on the bursae around a joint.

Examples include:

  • Throwing a baseball or lifting something over your head repeatedly
  • Leaning on your elbows for long periods
  • Extensive kneeling for tasks such as laying carpet or scrubbing floors

Other causes include injury or trauma to the affected area, inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout and infection.

Bursitis and tendonitis are frequently a warning sign of malnourishment. The problem is, you can be malnourished even when eating all day long. The key is not only eating adequate food, however in eating the right foods.

Magnesium is needed to balance with calcium and for proper muscular function. For calcium, take 1,500 mg daily. For magnesium, take up to 350 mg daily.
  • Amino acids (NS Amino Complex 4 caps daily): Needed for healing of tendons and tissues. Take as directed on label. Take on an empty stomach.
  • Multienzyme complex with pancreatin (NS Endocrine & Pancreas 2 capsules 3 times daily OR NS Digestive Enzymes Plus 2 caps 3 times daily): To aid digestion. Use a formula with high amounts of pancreatin. Take as directed on label. Take with meals.

  • BL Inflam Redux 2:  Inflammation and Pain
  • Vitamin A, plus natural beta-carotene, or carotenoid complex (Bl Total Nutrition Plus), plus selenium (AI Selenium): Vitamin A is needed for tissue repair and immune function. Natural beta-carotene is a potent antioxidant and precursor of vitamin A. For vitamin A, take Up to 3,000 mcg (10,000 IU) daily. If you are pregnant, do not exceed 3,000 mcg (10,000 IU) daily. For natural beta-carotene, take 25,000 IU daily. For carotenoid complex, take as directed on label. For selenium, take 200 mcg daily.
  • Vitamin C (NS Liposomal Vitamin C): Reduces inflammation and potentiates immune function. Essential for the formation of collagen, a protein in connective tissue. Take up to 2,000 mg daily, in divided doses.
  • Vitamin E (EQ Initial E): An anti-inflammatory free radical scavenger. Take 90 mg (200 IU) daily.
  • Zinc, plus copper (EQ Zinc plus Copper): Important in all enzyme systems and tissue repair. Copper is needed to balance with zinc. For zinc, take up to 40 mg daily. For copper, take 3 mg daily.

HELPFUL:

  • Boron (NS Bone Health 2-4 caps daily): For better calcium absorption. Take 3 mg daily. Do not exceed this amount.
  • Coenzyme Q10 (EQ CoQ10, FGF CoMega): Good for circulation. Take 60 mg daily.
  • Glucosamine sulfate, or N-acetylglucosamine (NS Glucosamine Joint Formula 2-6 caps daily): Important for the formation of connective tissues. For either, take as directed on label.
  • Methylsulfonyl-methane (MSM) (NS Glucosamine Joint Formula 2-6 caps daily): Has therapeutic properties. Aids in pain relief and immune function. Take as directed on label.
  • Multivitamin and mineral complex: Needed for tissue repair. Take as directed on label.
  • Pycnogenol or grape seed extract (NS Grape Seed Extract 2 caps 3 times daily): Powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Take as directed on label.
  • Silica (Horsetail) (NS Bone Health 2-4 caps daily): Supplies silicon, necessary for repair of connective tissues. Take as directed on label.
  • Vitamin B complex (EQ B Complex, AI B Complex): Important in cellular repair. Take 100 mg of each major B vitamin (thiamine and riboflavin) twice daily. Amounts of individual vitamins in a complex will vary. Do not exceed 35 mg niacin, 100 mg vitamin B6 , and 1,000 mcg folate daily.
  • Vitamin B12 (AI B12Folate): Needed for proper digestion and absorption of foods and for the repair of nerve damage. Injections (under a doctor’s supervision) are best. Is taking in supplement form take as directed on label.

 Home Remedies

While not all types of bursitis can be prevented, you can reduce your risk and the severity of flare-ups by changing the way you do certain tasks.

Examples include:

  • Using kneeling pads. Use some type of padding to reduce the pressure on your knees if your job or hobby requires a lot of kneeling.
  • Lifting properly. Bend your knees when you lift. Failing to do so puts extra stress on the bursae in your hips.
  • Wheeling heavy loads. Carrying heavy loads puts stress on the bursae in your shoulders. Use a dolly or a wheeled cart instead.
  • Taking frequent breaks. Alternate repetitive tasks with rest or other activities.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight. Being overweight places more stress on your joints.
  • Exercising. Strengthening your muscles can help protect your affected joint.
  • Warming up and stretching before strenuous activities to protect your joints from injury

Reflexology

For Bursitis in the hip: The hip reflexology points are located behind and underneath the outer ankle bones (also known as the lateral malleoli, which are the distal ends of your fibulas) on both ankles. The right side corresponds to your right hip and the left side corresponds to your left hip. To access points effectively finger or thumb walk down behind ankle bone and then underneath, creating an “L” shape towards your pinky toe. The point technically ends underneath the ankle bone. If you are unfamiliar with thumb or finger walking you can simply press or rub the area with your pointer finger or thumb.

For Bursitis in the lower back: The lower back reflexology points are located behind and underneath the inner ankle bones (also known as the medial malleoli, which are the bases of the tibias) on both ankles. We give attention to the lower back as some hip pain is associated with the lower back or sacrum. In reflexology, the lumbar area extends a little further up towards the big toe on the insides of the feet (also known as the medial aspect).
