Cough
A cough is your body's way of responding when something irritates your throat or airways. An irritant stimulates nerves that send a message to your brain. The brain then tells muscles in your chest and abdomen to push air out of your lungs to force out the irritant.
An occasional cough is normal and healthy. A cough that persists for several weeks or one that brings up discolored or bloody mucus may indicate a condition that needs attention.
At times, coughing can be very forceful. Prolonged, vigorous coughing can irritate the lungs and cause even more coughing. It is also exhausting and can cause sleeplessness, dizziness or fainting, headaches, urinary incontinence, vomiting, and even broken ribs.

You have a number of choices in how you use the herbs for cough listed above, but the simplest is surely a tea, requiring nothing more than boiling water and allowing your herbs of choice to steep.
The other advantage of tea is that sweetener is optional, so you’re not taking in gigantic quantities of sugar, which you might if you’re sipping syrup often.
Tea: Typically an infusion of 1-3 teaspoons of herbs per 8 oz. water. Note that some herbs do best using a cold infusion (steeping in cool rather than boiled water), as is the case with marshmallow.
In the case of sturdier ingredients, like dried elderberries or pieces of tougher roots, we need to simmer them for 20-30 minutes to extract the compounds we’re after, giving us what’s known as a decoction. You can dilute a decoction in hot water to make tea.
Syrup: Herbs are typically simmered over low heat for 20-30 minutes, and then honey is added. Syrups will keep a few weeks in the refrigerator, so only make as much as you think you can use. Adding alcohol can help preserve your herbal syrup, or you can freeze some in ice cube trays and thaw them when you |

| CV 22, ST 40, and LU 5 are key pressure points for cough and mucus symptoms. They can help you clear your lungs and nose of excess mucus by massaging on these points for a minute or more once or twice a day. |
| Reflexology |
|
The Chinese Reflexology point for the lungs is super easy to locate. You’ll find it on the balls of both of your feet. The left foot corresponds to the left lung and the right foot to the right lung.
This point is actually a rectangular-shaped area on the ball of the foot beneath the three middle toes. To massage this area, press deeply with your thumb pads and massage in small circles.
Massage the entire lung area, focusing on tender points for about 15 to 30 seconds per foot. This will help clear energy blocks in your lung and increase qi (energy) and blood flow to the area to promote healing. Remember, you have to do this every time you cough.
There are actually 10 points for the sinus, but the main point is located on the tips of both of your big toes on the underside of the toes. The left toe for the right side of the sinus cavity and the right toe is for the left side.
To massage this point, use your thumb and forefinger to pinch and rub your big toe. Press your thumb pad against the pad of the toe and rub side to side. Do this for about 15 to 30 seconds every time you cough.
If you practice consistently (every time you cough), you should start to notice your cough dissipating within a few days. As you get better, keep practicing the two-step routine until your cough is completely gone. |
