Condition: Cirrhosis (Liver Disorders)

Cirrhosis is severe scarring of the liver. This serious condition can be caused by many forms of liver diseases and conditions, such as hepatitis, long term excessive medications or chronic alcoholism.
Each time your liver is injured — whether by excessive alcohol consumption or another cause, such as infection — it tries to repair itself. In the process, scar tissue forms. As cirrhosis gets worse, more and more scar tissue forms, making it difficult for the liver to do its job. Advanced cirrhosis is life-threatening.

Symptoms
Cirrhosis often has no symptoms until liver damage is severe. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
  • Fatigue
  • Easily bleeding or bruising
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Swelling in the legs, feet or ankles (edema)
  • Weight loss
  • Itchy skin
  • Yellow discoloration in the skin and eyes, called jaundice
  • Fluid accumulation in the abdomen, called ascites (uh-SAHY-teez)
  • Spiderlike blood vessels on the skin
  • Redness in the palms of the hands
  • Pale fingernails, especially the thumb and index finger
  • Clubbing of the fingers, in which the fingertips spread out and become rounder than usual
  • For women, absence of or loss of periods not related to menopause
  • For men, loss of sex drive, testicular shrinkage or breast enlargement, known as gynecomastia
  • Confusion, drowsiness or slurred speech

Root Causes
  • Long-term alcohol abuse.
  • Ongoing viral hepatitis (hepatitis B, C and D).
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition in which fat accumulates in the liver
  • Hemochromatosis, a condition that causes iron buildup in the body
  • Autoimmune hepatitis, which is a liver disease caused by the body's immune system
  • Destruction of the bile ducts caused by primary biliary cholangitis
  • Hardening and scarring of the bile ducts caused by primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • Wilson's disease, a condition in which copper accumulates in the liver
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
  • Poorly formed bile ducts, a condition known as biliary atresia
  • Inherited disorders of sugar metabolism, such as galactosemia or glycogen storage disease
  • Alagille syndrome, a genetic digestive disorder
  • Infection, such as syphilis or brucellosis
  • Medications, including methotrexate or isoniazid

Nutritional Support Items

ESSENTIAL:

  • B1 and B12: An excellent liver detoxifier. (EQ B Complex)
  • Phosphatidyl choline, plus choline and inositol (NS Choline & Inositol): For fatty liver. For all, take as directed on label.
  • Primrose oil (EQ Primrose Oil): To prevent an imbalance of fatty acids, found in cirrhosis of the liver. For primrose oil, take 500 mg twice daily, with meals.
  • Vitamin B complex, plus extra vitamin B12, and folic acid: B vitamins are necessary for proper digestion, absorption of nutrients, and formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 prevents anemia and protect against nerve damage. Folic acid corrects deficiencies. For vitamin B complex, take 100 mg of each major B vitamin (thiamine and riboflavin) 3 times daily. Amounts of individual vitamins in a complex will vary. Do not exceed 35 mg niacin, 100 mg vitamin B6 , and 1,000 mcg folate daily. Use a high-potency formula. Injections (under a doctor’s supervision) may be necessary. For vitamin B12, take 1,000–2,000 mcg daily. Use a lozenge or sublingual form. For folic acid, take 200 mcg daily. (EQ B-Complex)

VERY IMPORTANT:

  • Garlic (TE Lypo): Detoxifies the liver and bloodstream.
  • L-arginine plus L-cysteine, and L-methionine, plus L-carnitine, plus glutathione: L-arginine plus L-cysteine helps to detoxify ammonia, a by-product of protein digestion that can accumulate when the liver isn’t functioning properly. L-methionine helps detoxify harmful toxins.  L-carnitine helps prevent accumulation of fat in the liver. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that protects against liver cancer. (NS Amino Complex) For L-arginine plus L-cysteine, take 500 mg each daily, on an empty stomach. Take with water or juice. Do not take with milk. Take with 50 mg vitamin B6 and 100 mg vitamin C for better absorption. For  L-methionine, take 500 mg daily, on an empty stomach. For L-carnitine, take 500 mg daily, on an empty stomach. For glutathione, take 500 mg daily, on an empty stomach.
  • Lecithin granules or capsules (TE Lypo): A powerful fat emulsifier. For granules, take 1 tbsp 3 times daily, with meals. For capsules, take 2,400 mg 3 times daily, with meals.
  • Multienzyme complex (TE LypoZyme) with betaine and hydrochloric acid (HCl), plus ox bile extract (EQ Hepa Detox): Multienzyme complex with betaine and hydrochloric acid (HCl) is needed for digestion to lessen the strain on the liver. Ox bile extract replaces the digestive enzymes normally produced by the gallbladder.  Take with each meal.
  • Colostrum: Improves immune function and protects the liver.
  • Raw liver extract (NS Liver Support): Prevents anemia and aids in re-building the liver. Take as directed on label.
  • S-adenosyl-methionine (SAMe): Provides antioxidant effects that improve the health of the liver. Caution: Do not use if you have bipolar mood disorder or take prescription antidepressants. Take as directed on label.

IMPORTANT:

  • Alfalfa (NS Green Max): Helps to build a healthy digestive tract and is a good source of vitamin K. Helps to prevent bleeding as a result of vitamin K deficiency, which is common with cirrhosis. Can be taken in tablet or liquid form.
  • Calcium and magnesium: Calcium promotes healing of tissue. Magnesium is beneficial for the nervous system. Use chelate forms. For calcium, take 1,500 mg daily, in divided doses, after meals and at bedtime. For magnesium, take up to 350 mg daily.
  • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids (NS Liposomal Vitamin C): An important antioxidant. Use a buffered form. Take up to 2,000 mg daily, in divided doses.

HELPFUL:

  • Alpha-lipoic acid (NS Alpha Lipoic Acid): Acts as a powerful antioxidant and balances blood sugar levels. Take 400 mg daily.
  • Coenzyme Q10 (FGF CoMega) 2 capsules daily
  • Amino acids (NS Amino Complex): A good source of protein that is easy on the liver.  4 capsules daily
  • Grape seed extract (NS Grape Seed Extract) or Pycnogenol: Powerful antioxidant. Aids the liver in removing toxic substances from the body.
  • Inositol hexaphosphate (IP6 ) (NS Cellular Health): Aids in reducing the buildup of fats in the liver. 2 capsules 2-4 times daily
  • Selenium: A good detoxifier. Take 200 mcg daily.
  • Vitamin D, and vitamin E: Vitamin D corrects deficiencies. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that aids circulation. For vitamin D, take as directed on label. Do not exceed 100 mcg (4,000 IU) daily. For vitamin E, take 90 mg (200 IU) daily. Use d-alpha-tocopherol form.
