Condition: Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walking and talking. They may also have mental and behavioral changes, sleep problems, depression, memory difficulties, and fatigue.

The most prominent signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease occur when nerve cells in the basal ganglia, an area of the brain that controls movement, become impaired and/or die. Normally, these nerve cells, or neurons, produce an important brain chemical known as dopamine.

When the neurons die or become impaired, they produce less dopamine, which causes the movement problems associated
with the disease. Scientists still do not know what causes the neurons to die. People with Parkinson’s disease also lose the nerve endings that produce norepinephrine, the main chemical messenger of the sympathetic nervous system, which controls many functions of the body, such as heart rate and blood
pressure. The loss of norepinephrine might help explain some of the non-movement features of Parkinson’s, such as fatigue, irregular blood pressure, decreased movement of food through the digestive tract, and sudden drop in blood pressure when a person stands up from a sitting or lying position.

Many brain cells of people with Parkinson’s disease contain Lewy bodies, unusual clumps of the protein alpha-synuclein. Scientists are trying to better understand the normal and abnormal functions of alpha- synuclein and its relationship to genetic variants that impact Parkinson’s and Lewy body dementia.

Some cases of Parkinson’s disease appear to be hereditary, and a few cases can be traced to specific genetic variants. While genetics is thought to play a role in Parkinson’s, in most cases the disease does not seem to run in families. Many researchers now believe that Parkinson’s results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, such as exposure to toxins.

Symptoms
Parkinson’s has four main symptoms:
  • Tremor in hands, arms, legs, jaw, or head
  • Muscle stiffness, where muscle remains contracted for a long time
  • Slowness of movement
  • Impaired balance and coordination, sometimes leading to falls

Other symptoms may include:

  • Depression and other emotional changes
  • Difficulty swallowing, chewing, and speaking
  • Urinary problems or constipation
  • Skin problems

The symptoms of Parkinson’s and the rate of progression differ among individuals. Early symptoms of this disease are subtle and occur gradually. For example, people may feel mild tremors or have difficulty getting out of a chair. They may notice that they speak too softly or that their handwriting is slow and
looks cramped or small. Friends or family members may be the first to notice changes in someone with early Parkinson’s. They may see that the person’s face lacks expression and animation, or that the person does not move an arm or leg normally.

People with Parkinson’s disease often develop a parkinsonian gait that includes a tendency to lean forward; take small, quick steps; and reduce swinging their arms. They also may have trouble initiating or continuing movement.

Symptoms often begin on one side of the body or even in one limb on one side of the body. As the disease progresses, it eventually affects both sides. However, the symptoms may still be more severe on one side than on the other.

Many people with Parkinson’s disease note that prior to experiencing stiffness and tremor, they had sleep problems, constipation, loss of smell, and restless legs.

 

Root Causes

The root cause of Parkinson’s disease is not fully understood, but it is generally believed to result from a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and cellular factors. Here's a breakdown of what’s known:
The core biological feature of Parkinson’s is the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra as well as an accumulation of Lewy bodies, which are abnormal clumps of the protein alpha-synuclein, in brain cells.  This leads to the motor symptoms like tremors, rigidity, and slow movement.

About 10–15% of cases are linked to inherited genetic mutations, including:

  • LRRK2
  • PARK7
  • PINK1
  • SNCA (alpha-synuclein gene)
  • GBA (associated with increased risk)

However, most cases are sporadic, meaning they occur without a clear genetic cause.

Exposure to certain environmental factors increases the risk:

  • Pesticides (e.g., paraquat, rotenone)
  • Heavy metals
  • Rural living and well water use
  • Head trauma

Conversely, smoking and caffeine consumption have been associated with lower risk, though the mechanisms are unclear.

Parkinson’s is also linked to:

  • Mitochondrial dysfunction (energy production issues)
  • Oxidative stress (damage from free radicals)
  • Impaired protein degradation systems, like the ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy-lysosome pathways

These problems contribute to neuron death and alpha-synuclein buildup.

In Summary

There isn’t a single root cause, but Parkinson’s seems to emerge when genetic susceptibility meets environmental insults, leading to cellular dysfunction and neurodegeneration.

ESSENTIAL:

  • Calcium, and magnesium, and potassium ( NS Bone Health and NS Magnesium Complex): People with Parkinson’s disease often develop porous bones and are in danger of fractures. Calcium also supports the nervous system. Magnesium is important for the function of nerves and muscles. Potassium aids nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction. For calcium, take up to 2,000 mg daily. For magnesium, take up to 350 mg daily. For potassium, take as directed on label.
  • Coenzyme Q10 (FGF CoMega or EQ CoQ10): allows cells to produce energy. May slow brain cell death and slow progression of the disease
  • Creatine: Often used by bodybuilders to increase muscle stamina. Research is ongoing on the use of creatine in muscle-depleting illnesses. Take as directed on label. Never exceed the recommended dose.
  • 5-hydroxy L-tryptophan (5-HTP)(NS Sleep Formula): Increases serotonin levels in the brain, which helps overcome insomnia and depression. Take 4 capsules approximately 1 hour before bed.
  • Glutathione (EQ Glutathione 5X): Often depleted in people with Parkinson’s disease. Found in the substantia nigra in the brain, where cells are dying. 10 drops 2-4 times daily
  • L–phenylalanine and L–tyrosine:  Amino acids that are converted into dopamine.   • Vitamin B complex, plus extra vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and vitamin B3 (niacin) or niacinamide, and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) (EQ B Complex, AI B Complex): Vitamin B complex is extremely important in brain function and enzyme activity. A lack of vitamin B2 (riboflavin) causes depression, nerve damage, and a reduction in neurotransmitter levels. Vitamin B3 (niacin) or niacinamide helps to maintain a strong immune system and overcome depression and irritability. Dopamine production depends on adequate supplies of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). For vitamin B complex, take 50 mg of each major B vitamin (thiamine and riboflavin) 3 times daily, with meals. Amounts of individual vitamins in a complex will vary. Do not exceed 1,000 mcg folate daily. Use a high-potency sublingual formula. Consider injections (under a doctor’s supervision). For vitamin B2 (riboflavin), take 50 mg 3 times daily, with meals. For vitamin B3 (niacin) or niacinamide, do not exceed 35 mg daily. Flushing may occur from niacin use—this is normal. Niacinamide does not cause flushing. Caution: Do not take niacin if you have a liver disorder, gout, or high blood pressure. For vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), take up to 50 mg twice daily, with meals. Consider injections (under a doctor’s supervision). Caution: Do not take this supplement if you are taking a levodopa preparation.
  • Vitamin C, and vitamin E, plus selenium (NS Liposomal Vitamin C, EQ Initial E, AI Selenium): Vitamin C and vitamin E are antioxidants that may slow progression of the disease and postpone the need for drug therapy. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant. For vitamin C, take up to 2,000 mg daily, in divided doses. For vitamin E, take 90 mg (200 IU) daily or 180 mg (400 IU) every other day. For selenium, take 200 mcg daily.
