Condition: Vaginitits

Vaginitis is an infection or inflammation of the vagina or vulva. This can result in discharge, itching and pain.

Symptoms
  • Burning sensation in the vagina
  • Itching
  • Pain while urinating
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Change in the color and amount of the discharge
  • White, gray or yellow vaginal discharge, with an unpleasant smell
  • Vaginal spotting or bleeding

Root Causes

Depends on the type of vaginitis such as:

1. Infectious Causes

These are the most common:

  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV):
    • Caused by an imbalance of normal vaginal bacteria (especially Gardnerella vaginalis).
    • Often associated with a fishy-smelling gray or white discharge.
  • Yeast Infections (Candidiasis):
    • Caused by an overgrowth of Candida (a fungus).
    • Common symptoms: thick, white "cottage cheese" discharge, intense itching.
  • Trichomoniasis:
    • A sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite (Trichomonas vaginalis).
    • Symptoms: frothy, yellow-green discharge with a strong odor, itching, discomfort during sex or urination.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs):
    • Such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes can also cause vaginitis.

2. Non-Infectious Causes

  • Irritants:
    • Soaps, douches, detergents, fabric softeners, scented toilet paper, or vaginal sprays.
    • These can disrupt the normal pH and cause inflammation.
  • Allergic Reactions:
    • To condoms (especially latex), lubricants, or hygiene products.
  • Hormonal Changes (Atrophic Vaginitis):
    • Common after menopause due to decreased estrogen.
    • Leads to thinning of vaginal walls, dryness, and irritation.

3. Poor Hygiene or Over-cleaning

  • Over-washing or using harsh products can disrupt the natural flora and pH of the vagina.

4. Foreign Bodies

  • Forgotten tampons, contraceptive devices, or other objects can cause irritation and infection.

 Risk factors include:

  • Hormonal changes due pregnancy, menopause or on birth control pills may increase the risk.
  • Sexual activity
  • Multiple sexual partners
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Certain medications such as antibiotics or steroids
  • Ill-fitting or damp under garments

Basically, good hygiene is helpful for preventing vaginitis. Additionally, it is also effective at soothing some of the symptoms and promoting quick recovery. You can follow some tips below to maintain vaginal hygiene:
  • Dry the underwear under direct sunlight.
  • Change your underwear every day and wash them carefully in hot water.
  • Don’t wear tight-fitting underwear or pants. Instead, you should wear cotton underwear & loose-fitting skirts or pants.
  • Stay away from excess washing of the vagina.
  • Avoid underwear and panty liners, tampons etc. made from synthetic fiber.
  • Avoid using feminine hygiene products as well as perfumed toilet papers.
  • Stay away from taking baths with bubble soap or bath, and utilizing soap to wash your genital area.
  • Typically, a strong immune system can help your body combat infections, thus reducing the risk of developing the inflamed vagina.
  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily. Exercise for half an hour, five times per week.
  • Enjoy sound sleep and get proper rest every day.
  • Follow a healthy diet daily with enough amount of zinc, iron, selenium, and vitamins A to build immunity.
  • Avoid eating sugar rich and processed foods.
  • Quit drinking and smoking, which may increase the risk of infection.
  • Avoid unprotected sex.
