Allergies - Food

Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.

Food allergy affects an estimated 8% of children under age 5 and up to 4% of adults. Some children outgrow their food allergies as they get older.

It’s easy to confuse a food allergy with a much more common reaction known as food intolerance. While bothersome, food intolerance is a less serious condition.

One must understand most food sensitivities are actually a symptom of some other imbalance such as:

Lack of proper hydration, Parasites, Excess Candida, Elimination issues, Liver and/or Gallbladder problems, Heavy Metals or other toxins.

 Root Causes

When you have a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or a substance in food as something harmful. In response, your immune system triggers cells to release an antibody known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) to neutralize the allergy-causing food or food substance (the allergen).

The next time you eat even the smallest amount of that food, IgE antibodies sense it and signal your immune system to release a chemical called histamine, as well as other chemicals, into your bloodstream. These chemicals cause allergy symptoms.

The majority of food allergies are triggered by certain proteins in:

  • Crustacean shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster and crab
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts, such as walnuts and pecans
  • Fish
  • Chicken eggs
  • Cow’s milk
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Other causes
  • Parasites
  • Candida Overgrowth
  • Elimination Issues
  • Liver/Gallbladder Issues
  • Other Toxicity
  • Lack of proper hydration

 Symptoms

For some people, an allergic reaction to a particular food may be uncomfortable but not severe. For other people, an allergic food reaction can be frightening and even life-threatening. Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to 2 hours after eating the offending food. Rarely, symptoms may be delayed for several hours.

The most common food allergy signs and symptoms include:

  • Tingling or itching in the mouth
  • Hives, itching or eczema
  • Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body
  • Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting

As mentioned above, in some people, a food allergy can trigger a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This can cause life-threatening signs and symptoms, including:

  • Constriction and tightening of the airways
  • A swollen throat or the sensation of a lump in your throat that makes it difficult to breathe
  • Shock with a severe drop in blood pressure
  • Rapid pulse
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness
  • Untreated, anaphylaxis can cause a coma or even death.

HELPFUL:

  • Bee pollen: Strengthens the immune system. Use raw crude pollen, preferably produced within 10 miles of your home. Caution: Bee pollen may cause an allergic reaction in some individuals. Discontinue use if a rash, wheezing, discomfort, or other symptoms occur. Start by taking a few granules at a time and work up to 2 tsp daily.

  • NS Amino Complex: Supplies protein in a form that is rapidly absorbed and assimilated. 4 capsules daily
  • NS Grape seed extract: A powerful antioxidant to prevent free radical damage. 2 capsules 2-3 times daily
  • Glucosamine sulfate or N-acetylglucosamine: Important for regulating the mucous secretions of the respiratory system. For either, take as directed on label.
  • L-cysteine and L-tyrosine: Promotes healing from respiratory disorders. Helpful for stress and allergic disorders. Take 500 mg each daily, on an empty stomach. Take with water or juice, not milk. Take with 50 mg vitamin B6 and 100 mg vitamin C for better absorption.
  • Manganese (NS Manganese Plus): An important component in many of the body’s enzyme systems. Use manganese chelate form. Take 4 mg daily for 3 months. Take separately from calcium.
  • Multivitamin and mineral complex with calcium and magnesium, and vitamin D3: All nutrients are needed in balance. Three nutrients necessary for proper immune function. For multivitamin and mineral complex with calcium and magnesium, use a hypoallergenic formula and take as directed on label. For Vitamin D3, take 10 mcg (400 IU) daily.

 Whole Food Sources and Spices

Pineapple - Pineapple contains an enzyme known as bromelain that has been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, which are beneficial for reducing allergic reactions.

Onions - Onions are a prebiotic, meaning they are needed to fuel the “good” bacteria in the gut. It is important to keep the digestive tract happy as it houses seventy-five percent of the immune system and controls how the body reacts to allergens. Quercetin is the active ingredient found in onions.

Turmeric is one of the most potent anti-inflammatory herbs on earth with thousands of studies to back this claim. Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric that is responsible for its benefits.

 Home Remedies

Ginger tea has been used to treat many ailments, including nausea and digestive problems. It remains a popular home remedy to ease an upset stomach and fight inflammation.

Lemons are high in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that helps maintain a robust immune system and protects against infection and disease. One older study found that long-term lemon use reduced symptoms such as sneezing and watery eyes associated with severe allergic rhinitis. You can slice a lemon, put it in water, and drink it throughout the day, or squeeze the juice from one or two lemons and dilute it with water to get the potential benefits of lemons.

Green tea is rich in antioxidants and can help fight inflammation. Some studies suggest it can also hinder mast cell activation and block histamines. Quercetin, a flavonoid found in green tea, may help stabilize the cells that release histamine in the body, resulting in an antihistamine effect.

Carrot juice is a more uncommon home remedy used to alleviate allergy symptoms. However, it is full of nutrients, providing carotenoids, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and K.
