Canker/Cold Sores - Fever Blisters - Herpes Viral Infections

Canker sores and cold sores are different types of blisters that affect the mouth. Some of the differences are:

  • Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, while canker sores have various causes such as injury, nutritional deficiencies, and bacterial infection.
  • Cold sores appear mostly on the outside of the mouth, while canker sores appear inside the mouth.
  • Cold sores are extremely contagious, while canker sores are not contagious at all.
 Symptoms

The symptoms of HSV-1 tend to be more severe in people who have recently caught the virus than in those who have had it for some time.

People usually get the infection as children, but it can happen to adults, too. Not everyone who catches the virus will develop symptoms, but those who do might experience the following:

  • A burning sensation in the mouth
  • Painful sores on the face, including on the tongue, gums, lips, throat, and face
  • A sore throat and pain when swallowing
  • Fever
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Swollen glands

The symptoms usually last for 1–2 weeks and then go away on their own.

Once someone has the virus, it moves into their nerves and lies dormant, or goes to sleep. In some people, it reactivates, or wakes up, every so often.

When this happens, people develop a cold sore. However, the symptoms are not usually as severe as they were the first time. For example, a person is unlikely to experience fever and swollen glands.

 Root causes

The herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) causes cold sores. HSV-1 is highly contagious and spreads in saliva. It is also very common, and more than half of all people in the United States will have contracted it by the time they reach their 20s.

Once someone has caught the virus, it stays in their body for the rest of their life. Sometimes, a person is asymptomatic, which means that they do not have any symptoms.

For some people, the virus will reactivate, or “wake up,” and cause a cold sore every so often. Many factors can prompt the virus to reactivate. Triggers vary among individuals, but they may include illness, injury, stress, sunshine, and weakened immune system.

 Nutritional Support Items

VERY IMPORTANT:

  • Acidophilus (EQ HDA): Aids in maintaining healthy balance of intestinal flora (“friendly” bacteria). Take as directed on label. Take on an empty stomach.
  • L-lysine (EQ L-Lysine): A deficiency may cause an outbreak of sores in and around the mouth. Caution: Do not take lysine for longer than six months at a time. Take 500 mg 3 times daily, on an empty stomach. Take with water or juice. Do not take with milk. Take with 50 mg vitamin B6 and 100 mg vitamin C for better absorption.
  • Vitamin B complex, plus extra vitamin B3 (niacin), and vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), and vitamin B12, and folic acid EQ B Complex, AI B Complex:   B vitamins are basic for immune function and healing. Deficiencies of vitamin B3 (niacin) have been linked to mouth sores. Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) is an antistress vitamin necessary for adrenal function. For vitamin B complex, take 50 mg of each major B vitamin (thiamine and riboflavin) 3 times daily. Do not exceed 35 mg of niacin, 100 mg of vitamin B6 , and 1,000 mcg of folate daily. For vitamin B3 (niacin), take up to 35 mg. Do not exceed this amount. Caution: Do not take niacin if you have a liver disorder, gout, and/or high blood pressure. For vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), take 50–100 mg 3 times daily. For vitamin B12, take 1,000–2,000 mcg daily, on an empty stomach. For folic acid, take 400 mcg daily.
  • Vitamin C (NS Liposomal Vitamin C): Fights infection and boosts the immune system.  Take up to 2,000 mg daily, in divided doses.

IMPORTANT:

  • Zinc (EQ Zinc): Enhances immune function and aids healing. Take up to 40 mg daily.

HELPFUL:

  • Anti Viral and Anti-Bacterial Herbs (NS Cats Claw, NS Astragalus, NS Echinacea, NS Olive Leaf, NS Oregano): Acts as a natural antibiotic and immunostimulant. Take 2 capsules 3 to 4 times daily.
  • Iron (AI Iron): May be helpful if canker sores are related to iron deficiency. Caution: Do not take an iron supplement unless your physician finds that you are iron deficient. Take as prescribed by physician.
  • Multivitamin and mineral complex (NS Liquid Life, NS Colloidal Minerals Plus): A balance of minerals is always important to maintain a healthy immune system. Take as directed on label.
  • Vitamin A with mixed carotenoids (BL Total Nutrition): Speeds healing, especially of the mucous membranes. Use an emulsion form for easier assimilation.  Helpful to put a few drops of vitamin A oil directly on the affected area.

 Herbs
  • Olive Leaf, Trifolocom, Echinacom, Echinacea
  • Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is an herbal licorice extract with strong anti-inflammatory effects that can help shrink the canker sore to speed up healing while also alleviating the pain, swelling, and redness associated with it.
  • Sage mouthwash. First, sage contains antimicrobial properties that protect the canker sore from infection-causing germs. Infection can make the lesion grow bigger and hurt more while also delaying skin healing. Second, sage helps bring down the pain, swelling, and redness associated with the sore due to its inherent anti-inflammatory nature.

 Homeopathy
  • Calcarean carbonica: for recurring canker sores, especially if you are tired easily and are prone to night sweats.
  • Hepar sulphuris calcareum: for infected canker sores.
  • Sage: has anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties that may help the oral flora. It may help to balance the immune system and help to heal canker sores.

 Beneficial Techniques and Modalities
  • Red Light Therapy
  • Home Remedies
  • Alum Powder
  • Coconut oil
  • Honey application
  • Milk of magnesia is traditionally used as a laxative, but it may also be useful in treating a canker sore due to its magnesium hydroxide content. Magnesium hydroxide works as a natural acid neutralizer that helps dry out the ulcer, keeps it from spreading, and makes it hurt less. Once the sore shrinks, it will heal quickly.
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Black tea bag - Tea is full of antioxidant compounds such as tannins that help reduce the inflammation and pain associated with a canker sore while also promoting skin healing. Given its high pH, tea may also help neutralize acids to shrink the ulcer quickly. It also contains astringent compounds, which may help relieve the pain.
  • Consume yogurt -  H. pylori bacteria and inflammatory bowel disease can upset your digestive system and trigger the development of canker sores. In such cases, eating yogurt may help restore healthy gut flora to facilitate better digestion and thereby rid you of the canker sores fast. Yogurt is one of the best sources of probiotics or good bacteria that keep the bad bacteria in check.
