Digestive Disorder - Flatulence

Also known as farting, passing wind or gas; flatulence is a medical term for releasing gas from the digestive tract through the anus. It happens when gas collects inside the digestive tract, gas collects in two main ways:

  • Swallowing air (aerophagia) while you eat or drink can cause oxygen and nitrogen to collect in the digestive tract.
  • Second, as your body breaks down food; gases like hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide collect in the digestive tract.

Either method can cause flatulence.

Associated disorders:

  • Gastroenteritis
  • IBS
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Celiac disease
  • Diabetes
  • Eating disorders
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Dumping syndrome

Whole Food Sources and Spices (with this condition note the items below that can increase flatulence)

The foods you eat could lead to excessive flatulence. Carbohydrates, for example, are known to cause gas. Proteins and fats tend to cause less gas than carbohydrates. Some proteins can cause gas to have a stronger odor however.

Some foods that increase gas include:

  • Beans
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Whole grains
  • Asparagus
  • Milk
  • Dairy products
  • Onions
  • Pears
  • Artichokes
  • Wheat
  • Oat bran
  • Peas
  • Potatoes
  • Corn
  • Raisins
  • Lentils
  • Prunes
  • Apples
  • Foods high in fructose or sorbitol, like fruit juices and sugar-free candies
  • Processed foods

*** Note
These foods can take a long time to digest, leading to the unpleasant smell associated with flatulence. Also, there are some foods the body can’t fully absorb. This means that they pass from the intestines to the colon without being completely digested first.

The colon contains a large amount of bacteria that then break down the food, releasing gases as they do so. The buildup of this gas causes flatulence.

Not all foods will cause gas in all people. Keeping track of the foods you eat and flatulence symptoms you experience can help narrow down which ones cause gas in your body.

 Home Remedies
  • Stay calm - Emotional stress can play a role in worsening a flatulence problem.
  • Get moving…. Sometimes flatulence can be less a matter of a faulty diet than of a faulty digestive process; the smooth passage of foods down the digestive tract may be hindered. Exercise helps to regulate the process.
  • If you will be taking a long airplane flight or doing extensive driving or sitting for long periods of time wear loose clothing. Tight-fitting clothes can compress the abdomen and cause a disruption in digestion processes.
  • Address habits that can lead to excessive belching, such as swallowing air and chewing gum.
  • Activated charcoal tablets, available without a prescription at drugstores, may help to absorb some excess gas and calm your flatulence problem.
  • Don’t stuff yourself. The more food in the gut, the more gas buildup. Eat light meals and slow down and chew your food well.
  • Don’t sip drinks through a straw. In using a straw, you suck in air, which causes gas
  • Proper hydration - Water is crucial for healthy digestion.
  • Caraway crackers. Caraway seeds and their oils are carminatives (they get rid of gas), but who wants to eat just the seeds? Caraway-seed crackers and breads with caraway seeds are a tasty way to make your system gas-unfriendly.
  • Consuming beans that are undercooked are more likely to cause gas than beans that are well-cooked. To ensure that your beans are cooked thoroughly, pull out the pressure cooker and follow the manufacturer’s advice for cooking beans. Or, cook them up to pressure for 30 minutes at 15 pounds per square inch on the gauge.

Acupuncture

Acupoints that may be useful for bloating include Zu San Li ST36, Hegu LI4, Nei Guan P6, Tian Shu ST25, and Zhongwan CV12.

Reflexology

Give your hand a gentle hand massage before you start.

Take care of your thumbs or fingers, when massaging the Reflexology points below, by not pressing too hard!

I find the best results come from working slowly and taking deeper breaths as you work on the points.

Bio-Energetic Balancing Remedies Suggestions
Note the items found in the Baseline/Comprehensive Scan.  Organs generally involved with flatulence are the Stomach, Lg/Small Intestine and the Liver/GB.  You can run the appropriate break out scan(s) and review the balancing items found.  Address these through supplementation or homeopathic support or detox remedies.  You can add the symptom flatulence (or gas) to the hold tank by setting the Search Criteria to Description and searching and adding 3-5 remedies.  Look for parasites, Candida, Low HCL, lack of enzymes and a need for probiotics, stagnant colon (these things in combination with diet are generally the cause of flatulence).  Slow down when eating and chew food well.  Make sure you are drinking enough water.
