Ulcers - Venous

Venous ulcers — (the most common type of leg ulcers) are open wounds that form on your leg, below your knee, and on the inner area of your ankle. They typically develop from damage to your veins caused by insufficient blood flow back to your heart.

In some cases, venous ulcers cause little to no pain unless they’re infected. Other cases of this condition can be very painful. Venous ulcers can take months to fully get well.

 Symptoms
  • Dull ache
  • Foul odor
  • Itching
  • Pus or other fluid that oozes from the sore.
  • Swelling (edema)

 Root causes
Venous ulcers are caused by damage or weakness in the valves of the veins. Other potential causes of venous ulcers include:
  • High blood pressure (hypertension), which damages blood vessel walls.
  • Venous obstruction, a vein blockage that is sometime caused due to blood clots.
  • Venous reflux, when blood flows backward through weak or damaged valves.
  • Varicose veins and spider veins
  • Trauma
  • Fractures or injuries
  • Obesity
  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Heart failure
  • Genetics - Family history of venous disease
  • Smoking

 Nutritional Support Items

IMPORTANT:

  • Coenzyme Q10 (FGF CoMega OR EQ CO-Q10) increases resistance to leg ulcers by increasing tissue oxygenation. For Coenzyme Q10, take 60 mg daily.
  • Garlic: Improves circulation and aids the healing process. Take 2 capsules 3 times daily.
  • Grape seed extract (NS Grape Seed Extract): A powerful antioxidant that prohibits free radical damage. Take as directed on label.
  • Shark cartilage: To improve blood vessel integrity. Take as directed on label.
  • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids (NS Liposomal Vitamin C) : Improves circulation and aids in the healing process. Also keeps infection in check. Take up to 2,000 mg daily, in divided doses.
  • Vitamin E emulsion: Helps the body use oxygen efficiently and speeds healing. Use d-alpha-tocopherol form. Emulsion is preferable to capsules; it provides for easier assimilation and greater safety at higher doses. Take 90 mg (200 IU) daily or 180mg (400 IU) every other day.

HELPFUL:

  • Colloidal silver (NS Colloidal Silver): A broad-spectrum antiseptic that promotes rapid healing and subdues inflammation. Apply topically to the affected area as directed on label.
  • Amino acids (NS Amino Complex): Promotes healing and tissue repair. Take 4 capsules Daily
  • Multivitamin and mineral complex: Necessary for proper healing and to remedy and/or prevent nutritional deficiencies. Take as directed on label, with meals.
  • Vitamin A emulsion with mixed carotenoids: Necessary for healing and protection of tissues. Use emulsion form for more rapid and complete assimilation. Take up to 3,000 mcg (10,000 IU) daily for 1 month. If you are pregnant, do not exceed 3,000 mcg (10,000 IU) daily.
  • Vitamin B complex, plus extra vitamin B12, and folic acid: B vitamins work best when taken together. Vitamin B12 allows proper tissue enzyme function
for healing. Helps to prevent anemia. Folic acid is vital for proper utilization of protein during the healing process. For vitamin B complex, use a high-potency formula. Do not exceed 35 mg niacin, 100 mg vitamin B6, and 1,000 mcg folate daily. For vitamin B12, use a lozenge or sublingual form. For folic acid, take 400 mcg twice daily, plus injections (under a doctor’s supervision) twice weekly or as prescribed by physician.
  • Vitamin K: Needed for blood clotting and healing. Take as directed on label.
  • Zinc: Aids in the healing of ulcers and boosts immune function. Take up to 40 mg daily.
