Hemorrhoids also called piles, are swollen veins in your anus and lower rectum, similar to varicose veins. Hemorrhoids can develop inside the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) or under the skin around the anus (external hemorrhoids).
| Symptoms |
|
Signs and symptoms of hemorrhoids usually depend on the type of hemorrhoid.
External hemorrhoids:
These are under the skin around your anus. Signs and symptoms might include:
- Itching or irritation in your anal region
- Pain or discomfort
- Swelling around your anus
- Bleeding
Internal hemorrhoids:
Internal hemorrhoids lie inside the rectum. You usually can’t see or feel them and they rarely cause discomfort. Straining or irritation when passing stool can cause painless bleeding during bowel movements. You might notice small amounts of bright red blood on your toilet tissue or in the toilet.
A hemorrhoid pushed through the anal opening (prolapsed or protruding hemorrhoid), results in pain and irritation.
Thrombosed hemorrhoids:
If blood pools in an external hemorrhoid and forms a clot (thrombus), it can result in:
- Severe pain
- Swelling
- Inflammation
- A hard lump near your anus
|
| Root Causes |
The veins around your anus tend to stretch under pressure and may bulge or swell. Hemorrhoids can develop from increased pressure in the lower rectum due to:
- Straining during bowel movements
- Sitting for long periods of time on the toilet
- Having chronic diarrhea or constipation
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Eating a low-fiber diet
- Regular heavy lifting
- Lack of proper water intake
- Lack of exercise

VERY IMPORTANT:
-
Fiber - colon cleanser (NS Ultra Colon Cleanse 4-6 caps with a warm glass of water before bed): *** Do not use while in a flare up. Keeps the colon clean, relieving pressure on the rectum. Take as directed on label. Take separately from other supplements and medications.
-
Calcium (NS Coral Calcium) and magnesium (NS Magnesium Complex): Calcium is essential for blood clotting. Helps prevent cancer of the colon. Magnesium is needed to balance with calcium. For calcium, use calcium chelate or aspartate form. Take 1,500 mg daily. For magnesium, take up to 350 mg daily.
-
Vitamin C (NS Liposomal Vitamin C): Aids in healing and normal blood clotting. For vitamin C, take up to 2,000 mg daily.
-
Vitamin E (EQ Inital E): Promotes normal blood clotting and healing. Take 90 mg (200 IU) daily or 180 mg (400 IU) every other day.
-
Horse Chestnut (NS Horse Chestnut 2 caps 3 times daily) : Strengthens Vein Integrity
-
EQ Varico HP: Homeopathic Support
-
BL The End Result: Apply Topically. Relieves inflammation and discomfort caused by hemorrhoids.
IMPORTANT:
-
Vitamin B complex (EQ B Complex or AI B complex), plus extra vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and vitamin B12, plus choline and inositol (NS Choline & Inositol): All B vitamins are vital for digestion. Improved digestion results in reduced stress on the rectum. For vitamin B complex, take 50–100 mg of each major B vitamin (thiamine and riboflavin) 3 times daily, with meals. Amounts of individual vitamins in a complex will vary. Do not exceed 35 mg niacin, 100 mg vitamin B6, and 1,000 mcg folate daily. For vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), take 50 mg 3 times daily, with meals. For vitamin B12, take 1,000 mcg twice daily. For choline and inositol, take 50 mg each twice daily.
HELPFUL:
-
Coenzyme Q10 (EQ CoQ10 or FGF CoMega): Increases cellular oxygenation and assists in healing. Take 100 mg daily.
- Potassium (EQ Potassium Chelate): Constipation, which can cause hemorrhoids, is common in those with potassium deficiencies. Take 99 mg daily.
- Shark cartilage (EQ Shark Cartilage): Treats pain and inflammation. Take 1 gram per 15 lbs of body weight daily, divided into 3 doses. Can be taken either orally or rectally, in a retention enema.
- Vitamin A with mixed carotenoids (BL Total Nutrition Plus): Aids in healing of mucous membranes and tissues. Take up to 3,000 mcg (10,000 IU) daily. If you are pregnant, do not exceed 3,000 mcg (10,000 IU) daily.
- Vitamin D (EQ D3): Aids in healing of mucous membranes and tissues. Also needed for calcium absorption. Take 15 mcg (600 IU) daily.

| Home Remedies |
- Drink plenty of fluids. Drink six to eight glasses of water and other liquids (not alcohol) each day to help keep stools soft.
- Consider fiber supplements. Most people don’t get enough of the recommended amount of fiber — 20 to 30 grams a day — in their diet. Studies have shown that fiber supplements improve overall symptoms and bleeding from hemorrhoids.
- If using fiber supplements, be sure to drink at least eight glasses of water every day (otherwise the fiber can cause or worsen constipation thereby worsening hemorrhoids)
- Don’t strain. Straining and holding your breath when trying to pass a stool creates greater pressure in the veins in the lower rectum.
- Go as soon as you feel the urge. If you wait to pass a bowel movement and the urge goes away, your stool could dry out and be harder to pass.
- Exercise. Stay active to help prevent constipation and to reduce pressure on veins, which can occur with long periods of standing or sitting. Exercise can also help you lose excess weight that might be contributing to your hemorrhoids.
- Avoid long periods of sitting. Sitting too long, particularly on the toilet, can increase the pressure on the veins in the anus.

| Reflexology
|
| Reflexology practitioners claim that strategic manipulation of reflex points on the feet and hands can extend its influence to the digestive and circulatory systems, indirectly easing the symptoms of hemorrhoids. When offering reflexology to a person suffering from hemorrhoids, practitioners suggest working the digestive system by focusing on the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder reflexes, the endocrine system by focusing on the adrenal gland reflexes, and the intestinal reflexes. The session should be finished by working the liver and solar plexus.
