Viruses that cause the common cold and the flu also cause most sore throats. Less often, bacterial infections (Streptococcus) cause sore throats.
Viral infections
Viral illnesses that cause a sore throat include:
- Common cold
- Flu (influenza)
- Mono (mononucleosis)
- Measles
- Chickenpox
- Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
- Croup — a common childhood illness characterized by a harsh, barking cough
Bacterial infections
Many bacterial infections can cause a sore throat. The most common is Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) which causes strep throat.
Other causes of a sore throat include:
- Allergies. Allergies to pet dander, molds, dust and pollen can cause a sore throat. The problem may be complicated by postnasal drip, which can irritate and inflame the throat.
- Dryness. Dry indoor air can make your throat feel rough and scratchy. Breathing through your mouth — often because of chronic nasal congestion — also can cause a dry, sore throat.
- Irritants. Outdoor air pollution and indoor pollution such as tobacco smoke or chemicals can cause a chronic sore throat. Chewing tobacco, drinking alcohol and eating spicy foods also can irritate your throat.
- Muscle strain. You can strain muscles in your throat by yelling, talking loudly or talking for long periods without rest.
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a digestive system disorder in which stomach acids back up in the food pipe (esophagus).
Other signs or symptoms may include heartburn, hoarseness, regurgitation of stomach contents and the sensation of a lump in your throat.
- HIV infection. A sore throat and other flu-like symptoms sometimes appear early after someone is infected with HIV.
Also, someone who is HIV-positive might have a chronic or recurring sore throat due to a fungal infection called oral thrush or due to a viral infection called cytomegalovirus (CMV), which can be serious in people with compromised immune systems. Tumors. A cellular abnormality tumor of the throat, tongue or voice box (larynx) can cause a sore throat.
Other signs or symptoms may include hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, noisy breathing, a lump in the neck, and blood in saliva or phlegm.

| Home Remedies |
- Taking 1 tablespoon of honey twice daily can help ease a sore throat.
Drinking hot or cold fluids can help ease the discomfort in two ways:
- Keeping the throat moist
- Soothing the throat
- Cold liquids, frozen popsicles, or ice chips can also help by numbing the painful area.
- A person should add about 1–2 teaspoons of salt to a cup and fill it with boiling water.
- They should then wait for it to cool before gargling a mouthful at a time and spitting it out.
- A person should take care not to swallow any saltwater. People with diabetes or those on a low sodium diet should practice extra caution with this treatment method.
- The body needs vitamins to fight off illnesses, including those that cause sore throats. Taking vitamins may help to prevent common colds and their symptoms.
- The body needs lots of rest when the immune system is fending off an illness.
- An irritant can sometimes cause or worsen a sore throat.
Examples of common irritants are:
- Smoking and vaping
- Being exposed to secondhand smoke
- Drinking alcohol
- Consuming acidic food and drink
- Eating spicy food
- Exposure to chemicals such as those in cleaning products can sometimes irritate the throat.
- A person with a sore throat should avoid smoking, vaping, and drinking alcohol, as these can worsen symptoms.
- People often get sore throats when the air around them is too dry.
- A humidifier turns water into vapor and releases it into the air, increasing the humidity.
- By adding moisture to the air, a humidifier can moisten the throat. This can sometimes help with the symptoms of a sore throat.
- It may seem obvious, but drinking water is an effective way to help sore throats.
- Dehydration can often cause a sore, dry throat. Drinking water will help remedy this.
- A person should drink more water when exercising, if they are unwell, and if they are in a hot climate.

Run a esophagus scan (contains throat sarcodes). Use the scan and identify if it is allergies, pathogens, or chemicals that are irritating the throat. Use the search criteria to look for flu, coxsackie virus, mono, strep, RSV, rhino virus, adeno virus, and coronavirus. If they test green, add to the hold tank.
If it is allergies, then run an allergy scan. Add energies for symptoms and the above listed homeopathics. Imprint into a correlating homeopathic. Also imprint the laser and target the affected area.
